Rose is a multi-faceted dancer, artist, web/graphic designer, musican and henna artist.
Rose has always possessed a passion for dance, Her fascination with dances of the East was first fueled by watching Indian television shows as a young girl in Jamaica. Possessing such an appreciation for dance, but not having the necessary resources to study dance at the time, one day finding a dance suitable for her.
She discovered Belly Dance when she was but 13 years of age, as she spotted a small poster outside of Soul Kiss Imports in the bohemian corner of Atlanta called, 'Little Five Points', advertising drop-in belly dance classes for $10. Immediately interested in the exotic aspect of the dance at the time, she took the class that very same night and was immediately fascinated and enraptured in the closeness and sisterhood of the belly dance circle. That, and the positive feedback that came from excuting the lessons with precise fluidity encouraged her to entertain the idea of studying the dance formally. The idea of studying the dance was delayed until age 16, when she was encouraged to take up the dance once again. Having no suitable preference for teachers at the time, she reverted to teaching herself, each day immersing herself in the studies of the dance and the culture in as many ways as possible. She began professional bellydancing shortly after at the age of 17.
Naturally bestowed with the gift of dance, she was self-taught by any means possible, and is always on the lookout for new ways to learn and integrete new ideas into her fusion. She also began to take on Kathak and Bollywood dancing, and is also experienced in most traditional dances associated with Belly Dance such as Raqs al Assaya, and the Moroccan Guedra.
It was not long after living and performing in Japan was she seen and taken under the wing of Asha, who voluntarily served as a mentor, constantly giving vital advice into the Ins and Outs of professional dancing in America.
Rose honors Indo-Carribean roots by pioneering a new fusion of Indo-carribean-styled bellydancing with chutney music, Chutney-Fusion Belly Dance, and emphasized her love of the arts of Japan and Japanese culture by integrating elements of Nihon Buyo (Classical Japanese dance/drama), called, 'Buyo Bellydance'.
About Belly Dance
Belly Dance, or 'Raqs Sharqi' (Dance of the People) is an ancient practice practiced by women of the Middle East for self-entertainment and to strengthen their bodies in preparation for childbirth. It is believed that the term, 'Belly Dance' is a corruption of the word, 'Beledi'. Belly Dance was first intrduced to the United States via the Chicago Exposition in the 1890's. The fluid undulation of the belly and hips led the art form to acquire the name, 'Belly Dance', and it has stuck ever since.
